Scientists Discover Why We Are Addicted to Sweets [Health News]

Lately, I’ve been suffering from a sweet tooth - I can’t get enough chocolate to satisfy my “craving,” and grapes just aren’t cutting it. I know enough now to just keep it out of the house so I don’t have access to it, but it’s nice to know my “addiction” might be more based on biology and less on my lack of will-power. According to an article on Science Daily, scientists found the brain can sense caloric values of foods independent of taste mechanisms:

Their finding that the brain’s reward system is switched on by this “sixth sense” machinery could have implications for understanding the causes of obesity. For example, the findings suggest why high-fructose corn syrup, widely used as a sweetener in foods, might contribute to obesity.

In their experiments, the researchers genetically altered mice to make them “sweet-blind,” lacking a key component of taste receptor cells that enabled them to detect the sweet taste.

In analyzing the brains of the sweet-blind mice, the researchers showed that the animals’ reward circuitry was switched on by caloric intake, independent of the animals’ ability to taste. Those analyses showed that levels of the brain chemical dopamine, known to be central to activating the reward circuitry, increased with caloric intake. Also, electrophysiological studies showed that neurons in the food-reward region, called the nucleus accumbens, were activated by caloric intake, independent of taste.

Significantly, the researchers found that a preference for sucrose over sucralose developed only after ten minutes of a one-hour feeding session and that neurons in the reward region also responded with the same delay.

So I eat chocolate, my brain releases an amount of dopamine relative to the caloric value of the chocolate, and I inherently place a higher value on chocolate because of the pleasant feelings it invokes. It’s like someone designing our bodies knew we wouldn’t eat enough if there weren’t some biological prompting. Frankly, I don’t know if this is good news or not - it’s like I’m my body is biologically designed towards obesity! Or, at least, our current society, with all it’s abundant and ready access to high-calorie foods, warps our biological mechanisms.

At any rate, I just need to keep grapes in the house, and evict the chocolate.

Eating Fabulous points to this Consumer Reports article on designing a heart-healthy diet. Advice offered includes recommended fruits and vegetables to load up on, designing a diet around the “Mediterranean eating plan,” and whether “heart-healthy supplements” actually promote heart health. Their supplement advice is particularly interesting, as they investigate three supplements currently marketed as heart-healthy, including B vitamins (like folic acid) and fish oils. For example, here’s what they have to say about vitamin E:

While considerable observational evidence has associated high intakes of vitamin E with protection against heart disease, several large-scale clinical trials have failed to find persuasive evidence that vitamin E supplements yield any benefit to the heart. In fact, some suggest the opposite.

Upshot: We feel that taking supplements of vitamin E to lower your risk of heart disease is a waste of time and money.

Consumer Reports also recommended eating a diet with enough “healthy fats” (as opposed to those nasty ones the USDA recently reported on) and various colors of fruits and veggies to ensure a wide variety of micronutrients. Personally, I’ve always thought consuming vitamins and nutrients naturally is probably much healthier than taking supplements. Of course, there’s so many chemicals in our food now, maybe it doesn’t matter.

Eating Healthy and Exercising While Travelling Gets Easier [Social Changes]

I don’t know about you, but often business and vacation travel is an excuse to take a hit from the hamburger pipe, and extended travel means weight gain. In recent years, I’ve actually sought out hotel exercise rooms, which usually constitutes one treadmill, three TVs and eight people packed into a closet. However, it appears hotel food and exercise offerings are about to get a major uplift. According to a press release, Sheraton Hotels and Resorts has signed an exclusive deal with Core Performance to develop a training and nutrition program for guests that includes

new state-of-the-art fitness centers; healthier dining options; training programs offered on-demand in guest rooms; access to Core Performance’s customized on-line training programs; and a unique Conventions and Meetings program that enables enhanced performance. Sheraton properties around the world will begin to roll out Core Performance programming this summer and continue throughout 2008.

Hopefully, this move signifies a societal shift in exercise and nutrition. A Sheraton VP states “Our guests have told us that health and fitness are a priority and that they value tools to help them balance this aspect of their lives while traveling.” It’s exciting to see Sheraton use health and nutrition as a way to redesign its image and stand out from the rest of the hotel chains - hopefully Sheraton’s numbers rise and other hotel chains get on the nutrition bandwagon.

Web Visits on the Rise - Doctors Practicing Medicine on the Internet [Health 2.0]

I recently read an interesting article on Medical News Today reporting health insurers will begin covering online physician visits:

Health insurers Aetna and Cigna have announced that they will pay for online physician visits, and patients will be required to contribute a copayment for the visits, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Aetna on Jan. 1 expanded a pilot project in California, Florida and Washington state to the rest of the country, and Cigna said it would begin paying for online visits in January 2009. The insurers believe that members will like the service because it can improve efficiency and could prevent more costly problems, the Inquirer reports.

Of course, my initial reaction is - is anyone actually offering online physician visits? Apparently so, if heavies like Aetna and Cigna are getting in the game. Physicians don’t (typically) obtain technology degrees or have the programming skills necessary to open up their practice to an online community, so the first step is supplying physicians a “web visits” framework. Cigna and Aetna both partner with RelayHealth, a company that enables “web visits” through services including online medical chart storage, online appointment scheduling, automated interviews that serve to triage the patient before communication to the physician begins, online prescription center, and a payment/collections/insurance filing center. RelayHealth maintains an entire page describing the benefits and features available to patients, which can be summarized by these two FAQ answers:

A webVisit is an online consultation between a doctor and an established patient about a non-urgent healthcare matter. When conducting a webVisit, RelayHealth guides you through an interactive interview process appropriate for your specific symptoms, and then builds a succinct message to the doctor based upon the answers you provide.

Apparently, companies that assist in enabling physicians to offer medical services online are stating to sprout up. But are any physicians actually offering online services? Recently, ReadWriteWeb reported on the Health 2.0 conference, part of which was dedicated to the “web visit” phenomenon:

Jordan Shlain founded the San Francisco On Call Medical Group, a group of doctors who make house calls almost anywhere their patients want to see them (home, office, even cruise ships) using a souped-up, hi-tech version of the doctors’ venerable black bag.

Jay Parkinson is aiming to be the “small town doctor of Brooklyn ,” using video camming, text messaging, email and chat to help treat his patients.

Both Jordan and Jay showed how different the standard model of health care can be — but also revealed the huge gap between the existing system of health care and the state-of-the art technology that potentially could be harnessed to serve patients at an ordinary level. In the end, this gap is the core dilemma facing the Health 2.0 efforts to transform the industry.

We’ve come a long way from using the Internet to display office hours and send X-rays to other countries for analysis. It appears that soon, patients will have true 24-hr access to non-emergency health care. Add Second Life to the mix, and things get even more interesting - take, for example, this Flickr slideshow demonstrating some interesting possibilities. And soon, with services like Carol getting a start, we may have access to a-la carte style healthcare, where patients purchase “care packages” and receive the care at any participating location.

With all these changes afoot, the real question is - will patients use the services? What about you - are you excited by the possibility of receiving healthcare with an instant-messaging client and web-cam, or will you always expect on face-to-face treatment?

Study Shows Natural Trans Fats May Have Health Benefits [Health News]

Medical News Today reported on a study on possible health benefits from natural trans fats. According to the study, rats fed a diet enriched with trans vaccenic acid experienced a drop in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.

University of Alberta researcher Flora Wang found that a diet with enriched levels of trans vaccenic acid (VA) - a natural animal fat found in dairy and beef products - can reduce risk factors associated with heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

Results indicated this benefit was due in part to the ability of VA to reduce the production of chylomicrons - particles of fat and cholesterol that form in the small intestine following a meal and are rapidly processed throughout the body. The role of chylomicrons is increasingly viewed as a critical missing link in the understanding of conditions arising from metabolic disorders.

Because VA is the major natural trans fat in dairy and beef products, comprising more than 70 per cent of the proportion of natural trans fat content in those products, the findings support a growing body of evidence that indicates natural animal-based trans fat is different than harmful hydrogenated trans fat created through industrial processing, Wang noted.
