It’s not often I get to report on health news happening in my own back yard. Our local newspaper, Asheville Citizen-Times, conducted a non-scientific taste test on 6 different diet bars with a four-person panel. Here’s a summary of the bars tested and the panel’s responses:
Special K protein bar, chocolate peanut butter bar
“It kind of tasted like air, chocolate air. It’s not very filling.”South Beach Diet meal replacement bar, chocolate crisp
“It wasn’t really chocolatey. It’s brown, but not chocolate … this is why people don’t diet.”Atkins Advantage, chocolate peanut butter meal replacement bar
“You definitely need water with this … It has the texture of dirt.”Kashi GoLean, high protein and fiber bar, cookies n’ cream
“Play-Doh. Edible Play-Doh; that’s what it tastes like!”Zone Perfect, all-natural nutrition bars, strawberry yogurt
“Comparatively, I like it better. You can definitely taste the fruit, but it’s not fresh.”Met-Rx Big 100 meal replacement bar, chocolate chip cookie dough
“It tastes like a dog biscuit.”

The main trouble is that they just aren’t satisfying. I don’t feel full after eating one… which means I want to eat another. And maybe another after that! They are too convenient, and I have a bad tendency to grab for convenience when tired.
For that reason, I don’t keep them in the house. There are other quick snacks that are healthier.
Thanks for commenting, Cynthia! I have to agree - most diet bars aren’t filling at all, and don’t taste good to boot. Some bars, mostly those that include chromium, also give me headaches and sugar crashes. Out of all the bars I’ve tried, I only like one: Odwalla bars. One bar fills me up, it feels like I’ve eaten real food, most of them taste good, and I get no headaches or crashes.
And like you, I try to keep other convenient snacky things on hand, like grapes, cut carrots, dried fruits and other more healthy stuff. I do try to stay away from pre-cut fruit and vegetables though - like Marisa at Slashfood, I have an innate distrust of food the more processing it suffers.
Keep working ,great job!
