Great break down. I've never heard of eating the same things over and over again.

Also the tips on calories that you mentioned are awesome. I mean how many calories does a gatorade have? I bet a lot!

Taking a day off can be an essential strategy depending on what your starting point and goals are. If you have 30,40,50 lbs or more too lost this "cheat day" is physiologically uneccesary, whether it helps mentally is for each person to decide on their own. If you are only losing a small amount of weight, however, such as in the final weeks of a bodybuilding diet, a cheat will replenish your body's leptin levels and allow it to get leaner than it would otherwise. In that sense it is a good idea, but a cheat meal will suffice..not an entire day of binge eating.
In summation, if your main goal is "losing fat" and aren't already pretty lean, I agree that a cheat day is dangerously counter-productive. If you are just tightening up a few percent, however, a cheat meal can be a good idea.

One of the most seductive things about Tim's diet is in fact the day off to eat what you want. It is very similar to the diet and weight program by the legendary author of Body for Life Bill Phillips. The reason behind this is that our bodies are incredibly smart constructions that are built for survival. I believe part of the reason we're all getting bigger is because our genetic lineage is not yet aware of McDonalds or 7-11 and thus still hasn't figured out that we won't have to go a week until our next meal. Our bodies are constantly storing energy for periods of deprivation and in fact the reason many restrictive diets don't work is because the body thinks it is going into starvation and then starts to store every little thing you put in your mouth. Oh the bitter irony!! When you shake up your diet by blowing out on calories and carbs one day a week then the body gets "tricked" into not plateuing. It really is a good thing to have that day off.

HOWEVER (and it's a big however) these guys are generally healthy guys. They work out, life weights, don't smoke and 6 days a week they watch their diet like the most anally retentive of the Spartan army! While I agree with you that bingeing is just not a healthy behaviour, if anyone can get away with it these guys can. For the average Joe, eating whatever you want and as much as you want is a bad idea. So instead you have a day where you can eat less strictly than the other days. Have a piece of cake or chips and a beer, treat yourself to a burger and fries - but be sensible. Limit it to one meal instead of the whole day. Be sensible.

Great article, thanks.

Also, there is nothing wrong with 'white carbs'. People the world over eat bread, oats, rice, potatoes and pasta and are healthier and slimmer than we Americans are.

I agree with Tim on taking a day off. That does give you the mindset that the way you are eating on your "diet" is temporary. It is better to change your eating habits and make healthier choices on a daily basis. This doesn't mean that you can't occasionally eat a small portion of your favorite dessert. However, if your treat is a problem for you and you can't stop once you start, then it is better to get a healthier substitute.
